The Plan Office would like to inform you of the following:
For Participants with Anthem Blue Cross:
There has been confusion among some health care providers and participants about the use of anesthesia for endoscopic procedures. Consistent with the policies of many health plans, the Motion Picture Industry (MPI) Health Plans with the Anthem Blue Cross option do not cover anesthesiologist services for the majority of endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopies, because these procedures can generally be performed using conscious sedation. Conscious sedation permits a procedure to be accomplished safely and without pain.
There are exceptions to this policy, including for Participants who have sleep apnea, are obese or pregnant. If you believe you have a condition that requires an anesthesiologist for an endoscopic procedure, ask the provider to request pre-authorization from the MPI Medical Director.
